There's a wonderful contrast
between old and new at the brand new Corsham Tourist Information and Heritage
Centre.
Housed in the former home of a
seventeenth-century clothier, the building has been sensitively designed to
blend in with its unique historical background, while using the very latest
technological aids for successful destination management.
Tourism Officer Angela Powell is enthusiastic
about Corsham and the beautiful surrounding North Wiltshire market towns and
villages.
"Quarrying of golden Bath stone and weaving
of woollen cloth were once the two major industries in this area," she
explains.
"The new Heritage Centre will provide
interactive displays and hands-on exhibits presenting the history of the
development of these industries and a fascinating insight into to the lives of
the weavers and stonemasons."
"The Centre will provide an educational
resource for schools, local residents and the many visitors who come to enjoy
the wealth of beautiful buildings in this charming small southern Cotswold town."
"Corsham stone has been used all over the
world - the City Hall in Cape Town, built in 1905, is a fine example - and so
with such a tradition of quality and desirability, it's an important part of our
local heritage."
"The weaving industry, too, is rooted in
history and the beautifully preserved Flemish Weavers' Cottages in the centre of
Corsham are a reminder of the Huguenots who emigrated from their own country to
escape religious persecution, bringing with them their weaving looms which they
used on the top floors of their new homes."
"The new Centre will be the focal point for
marketing Corsham and the area to domestic and foreign visitors, and so will
require all the help that a CTV system can give us."
Corsham's new system consists of two PCs
operating the TIM4 DMS, plus the all-important Marketing Module.
A VisitIT people counter has also been installed,
to monitor visitor throughput - as VisitIT not only tells us how many visitors
come through the doors but also the time of their visit, it will be invaluable
for assessing opening hours and establishing staffing rotas in the Centre.
In addition, the manager of the new Centre will
use the computerised system as an educational resource, to provide information
and worksheets at all levels for schools and other visitors researching the
area.
"We intend to supply information to groups
before they arrive at the Centre, so that they can make the most of their
visit," says Angela.
"With the unique flexibility of our system,
we can produce tailored worksheets and information packs on specific topics -
say, the development of quarries, or Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who found the
seams of golden stone during excavation of the nearby Box Tunnel - making the
information easy to assimilate for the level we need."
With so much interest in the region, Angela
maintains a visitor database so that she can direct her marketing programme
towards the most productive areas.
Corsham is part of the North Wiltshire network,
so information can be shared on local attractions and events from Chippenham:
once again, Angela finds the CTV systems so user-friendly that there are no
difficulties in tapping into to one another's resources.
"With one full-time manager and 25 volunteer
part-time staff, we obviously have a wide range of IT-awareness at Corsham,"
says Angela. "CTV's TIM4 is so accessible, and so easy to understand and
use, that no-one should have any problems in using it.
"Now, we're very excited about what CTV can
do next to help us promote ourselves as a whole destination.
"We have been working closely with the team
at CTV for several years now, and have complete faith in their flexibility and
dependability when working out new systems which meet our needs exactly.
"We look forward to developing the systems
further in the future."
