Students reading for a degree in Tourism Management at the
University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC), are having their course brought
right up to date, thanks to forward thinking on the part of their department,
plus some welcome EU funding.
Greg Dainty, an IT lecturer in the department of
Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure at UWIC, said: "We are engaged in
consultancy work within the torism industry concerning the importance of the
effective use of IT.
"As a result we have felt the need to
provide students with information and experience of IT systems specific to the
tourism sector.
"We wanted to make the IT teaching more
closely related to their studies for BA in Tourism Management degrees, and more
closely related to the present-day needs of tourism - that is, what happens in
the real world rather than the theoretical one.
"We have talked to the users within the
industry, and discussed their needs, and how they go about choosing their
products and systems.
"It makes sense to use the foremost IT
system for destination management, and so we are now installing CTV's
destination management software on to twenty PCs in the department.
"This will enable us to incorporate
experience of actual systems into the different modules within the degree
course, and will give our students the chance to use the most up-to-date
software."
Chris Sims of CTV said: "We
are delighted to be involved with UWIC.
"This really underlines the
commitment we have made in the new generation of CTV software.
"Our approach has been
to provide a solid professional management system with inbuilt flexibility,
scalability and practicability, and we are glad that the students will be able
to learn from it."
